Brief Project Description

This project will assist the Nepal Government's broad agenda of supporting the domestic exporters and entrepreneurs, an improvement in Nepal's investment climate, a better understanding of the dynamic effects of trade liberalization, and an analysis of new areas that might offer potential gains for domestic producers and exporters.

 

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to build the capacity and capabilities of the government, the private businesses, and citizens in urban and rural areas to take advantage of international income and employment opportunities. To this end, the project consolidates past body of accomplishments in trade policy and logically extends the work into areas that will help Nepal take advantage of opportunities offered by its globally integrated status over the medium-to-long term. To achieve this objective, the project seeks to intervene in five areas:

To Increase competitiveness of Nepali exporters
To create a more empowered and engaged private sector
To enhance the rigor of analysis underpinning Nepali trade policy
To Foster human-development-friendly investment
 
Project Activities
The planned and ongoing activities of the project are:
 
Provide training and conduct studies on issues related to trade, investment and post WTO membership obligations; and strengthen the office of the IF focal point.
Assess feasibility of alternate transit routes/facilities
Equip customs offices with infrastructure, including human resources development
Provide equipment for testing infrastructure
Prepare operational plan and promotional tools for Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC)
Establish a mechanism for dialogue between the state and the private sector on trade-related policy making
Construct econometric model of Nepali Economy
Assist the government with entering into a free trade agreement (FTA)
Produce analysis of the viability of and options for Nepal's exchange rate
Assist consultations on key policy and institutional reforms for improving investment climate
Conduct diagnostic studies of experiences elsewhere in, and Nepali potential for exports of: educational, health and high-end retail services.
